Functions:

a. Ethical Review and Approval:

  • Review research proposals involving human subjects to assess their compliance with ethical principles, regulatory requirements, and international guidelines.
  • Ensure that researchers obtain informed consent from participants and protect their rights, privacy, and confidentiality.
  • Evaluate the potential risks and benefits of research projects and ensure that they are justified and minimized.
  • Approve research protocols that meet ethical standards and provide recommendations for addressing any ethical concerns.
    1. Policy Development and Guidance:

      • Develop and disseminate policies, guidelines, and standards for ethical conduct in research.
      • Provide guidance and support to researchers, research institutions, and ethics committees on ethical issues related to research involving human subjects.
      • Foster awareness and understanding of ethical principles and regulatory requirements among stakeholders in the research community.

      c. Training and Capacity Building:

      • Conduct training programs, workshops, and seminars to educate researchers, ethics committee members, and other stakeholders on ethical principles and best practices in research ethics.
      • Build the capacity of research institutions and ethics committees to effectively review and oversee research involving human subjects.
      • Promote a culture of ethical conduct and responsible research practices within the research community.

      d. Monitoring and Oversight:

      • Monitor compliance with approved research protocols and ethical standards throughout the duration of research projects.
      • Conduct periodic reviews or audits of research activities to ensure adherence to ethical principles and regulatory requirements.
      • Investigate and address any allegations of research misconduct or breaches of ethical standards.

      e. Public Engagement and Advocacy:

      • Engage with the public, policymakers, and other stakeholders to raise awareness of ethical issues in research and foster dialogue on ethical considerations.
      • Advocate for the protection of research participants’ rights and the promotion of ethical conduct in research at the national and international levels.
      • Collaborate with relevant government agencies, institutions, and organizations to advance the ethical governance of research.

     

  • By fulfilling these functions, the National Research Ethics Board (NREB) plays a critical role in ensuring the ethical conduct of research involving human subjects and promoting the integrity and credibility of the scientific enterprise.
